Scope

To extend the DICOM Standard to support clinical trials and research using images.

Roadmap

  • Continue to evaluate issues related to performing clinical trials and research using images.

Short-Term Objectives

  • Improve support for encoding of images and image-like objects for research results
  • Improve structured reporting and segmentation support for clinical trials results and measurements.
  • Improve de-identification support

Current Status

  • No recent activity
  • Tracking of updates to de-identification profile handled by WG-06

Current Work Items

  • No current work item.

Risks

  • Other groups will develop “standards” related to the performance of clinical trials that are incompatible with DICOM and hence exclude clinical production systems from use in such trials.
  • Failure to adopt de-identification standards leading to poor quality de-identified data for sharing.

Challenges and Opportunities

  • Lack of adoption of research-specific enhancements to image IODs or SR documentation of experiments by mainstream vendors.

Relationships to Other Standards

  • Research funding stakeholders (e.g., US NCI) remain engaged (esp. through activities related to data sharing and repositories)
